LED DISPLAYS ARE CHEAPER TO OWN AND TO MAINTAIN OVER THEIR LIFETIME AND THEY BRING IN MORE BUSINESS THAN OTHER SIGNS

 

  • Data show that LED displays are usually cheaper and certainly no more expensive than the alternative. They cost less than neon or incandescent light signs because they are much, much cheaper to operate and to maintain. Lifetime use (including purchase price) is lower than the alternative.

    Less expenditure and less maintenance

  • An incandescent bulb has to be replaced about every 6 months. An LED fixture lasts about 11 years, saving the cost of labour involved in replacing bulbs every six months or so. Here's a calculation to illustrate the above points:

    BC Hydro calculates that an incandescent EXIT sign costs about $11.00 per year in electricity. A comparable LED EXIT sign costs about $1.30 in electricity annually. And that is a very small sign. Saving over the 11 year life of the sign about $106.00 in electricity alone for a single sign. Multiply by the number of signs in a business.

     

    An incandescent bulb has to be replaced about every 6 months.

    Saving on cost of bulb replacement @ $4.00 per year, would be $44.00 for the 11 year life of an LED sign

     

    Saving on cost of labour involved in bulb replacement:

    At minimum wage and assuming only 15 minutes to replace a bulb

    (15 min X 2 [twice a year] X 11 years)/60 min X 7.15 (MinWage)  = $39.33 for each bulb replaced over an 11 year period

     

    Total saving on this tiny sign, over the life of the sign is

    106 + 44 + 39.33 = $189.33

     

    The saving in maintenance of large outdoor signs is huge: Replacement or repairs often involve bringing a lift truck to replace a single burnt out lamp and the job takes hours.

    Reduced Fire Hazard 

  • Because LED's are low voltage, they fall under U.L. low voltage lighting classification, thus providing the safety and fire hazard reduction required for some installations
  • Low voltage and low operating temperature make LED signs fire safe, especially where used as indoor signs
  • Where fire safety is an issue, there is reduced risk of fire and potential loss of life and goods due to low voltage and cold operation.
