DLP (Digital Light
Processing) technology is based on a DMD (Digital Micromirror Device)
which switches light through millions of microscopic mirrors spaced less
than 1 micron apart. The technology was developed by Texas Instruments.
The mirrors can be switched on and off thousands of times a second.
Combined with a colour wheel, DLP can produce more than 16 million
colours. Video or graphic signals are turned into digital code that
tilts the DMD mirrors, reflecting a digital image onto a display panel
or a presentation wall. DLP consistently delivers very high picture
quality, the projection is immune to heat, humidity or vibration, power
consumption is not high and it has a long product lifetime.
DLP technology is
available in many commercial and home applications including projectors,
large screen TVs, home theatre systems, commercial displays and video
walls. For configurations consisting of multiple displays, the system
may be networked (wired or wireless) allowing central control and
content delivery. DLP screens are currently available in sizes from 43"
to 65"
Advantages of DLP
Excellent colour reproduction
Excellent contrast ratios
Bright projections even when ambient light is high
Sharp projections produce a mirror image of an incoming video or graphic signal
High DLP speeds allow more accurate reproduction of rapid motion without blur or smear
Images are smoother than other technologies in which individual pixels are clearly visible
Screens do not suffer burn in
Lightweight
DLP is suitable for
applications in retail stores, restaurants, shopping malls, educational
facilities, places of worship, museums, boardrooms and presentation
rooms of all sizes. DLP is ideal for home theatres. DLP is geared mainly
to indoor applications but is also suitable for certain types of outdoor
applications. Effective and easy to operate software permit the rapid
change of messages. Live data can be integrated and displayed.
